Grizzlies center Zach Edey was caught on police body camera being sternly lectured after driving more than 100 miles per hour in Indiana.

The stop occurred in May in Tippecanoe County, where Edey told the officer he was on his way to Purdue, his alma mater. State Police said he was going 101 in a 55.

“You know exactly why I pulled you over,” the officer told him. “You were going 101.”

Edey, 23, explained that he had been trying to pass another vehicle. The officer, visibly frustrated, cut him off. “No, you don’t pass at 100. The road is 55. You were going almost double the speed limit.”

She continued with a pointed lesson. “You could pass someone at 80. Eighty? OK. One hundred? One hundred is not OK. Ever. You were speeding before that, and that’s how you were able to get up to 100.”

Edey handed over his license and registration before the officer cited him for both speeding and reckless driving. She told him reckless driving is a “jailable offense” but said she would not be taking him to jail that day. “Slow down,” she added, before letting him leave.

TMZ reported that Edey reached a deal with prosecutors on July 23. He admitted to speeding, paid $639.50 in fines, and had the misdemeanor reckless driving charge dropped.

The 7-foot-4 Canadian has not publicly commented. It remains unclear if the Grizzlies or the NBA will pursue any discipline.

Edey averaged 9.2 points and 8.3 rebounds in 70 games last season.
