Bones Hyland may be known primarily for his smaller role in the NBA.
His career resume is distinguished by having played only for playoff-caliber teams: the Denver Nuggets, Los Angeles Clippers, and, since last season, the Minnesota Timberwolves.
This background has allowed him to share a locker room with numerous great players, including Nikola Jokic, Kawhi Leonard, James Harden, Russell Westbrook, and, currently, Anthony Edwards.
Hyland recently drew a comparison between his current teammate and the styles of Harden and Westbrook.
One might naturally think of Edwards, given his offensive prowess and ability to achieve triple-doubles.
However, here, Hyland speaks about Mike Conley and his leadership.
“I feel like everyone that comes in here is always impressed with Mike,” said the 25-year-old guard.
“He actually reminds me a lot of Russ, of James, just the guys who embrace everybody, coming in with a smile on his face every day, taking on that big role of leading a team and making sure their voice is being heard on the floor and in the locker room as well, keeping all the guys together.”
“Since I’ve been here, he always took me with open arms, every day, with a smile on his face. It feels good just to be next to Mike and having that connection with him,” Hyland added.
Some analysts might consider Conley a liability for the Timberwolves, but he is still an important figure for the team.
His leadership is valuable, as young players like Rob Dillingham have said that Conley is their mentor.
The former All-Star has nearly 20 years of NBA experience and consistently maintains solid production. That’s what sets an example.
Although he might not be a starter next season, Conley’s presence is valuable for the Timberwolves, especially in leading the team and keeping the players united, as Hyland said.
