With LeBron James announcing he will be leaving the Los Angeles Lakers and finishing his illustrious career elsewhere, many assumed his son Bronny James would be joining him on his new team.
That may not necessarily be the case, however, as Bronny recently attended the Lakers’ Summer League game in Las Vegas with his teammates after getting his contract guaranteed for the 2026-27 season. And according to Dan Woike of The Athletic, Bronny remains well-liked in the Lakers organization and his future may not be tied to LeBron’s:
While LeBron and Bronny playing together as teammates was one of the more incredible storylines following the 2024 NBA Draft, assumptions that the father and son staying linked going forward are false, according to league sources who were granted anonymity to discuss front-office strategies.
LeBron’s departure from the Lakers after eight seasons isn’t viewed as anything related to Bronny’s standing with the team. While anything can happen, the younger James, 21, is well-liked in the Lakers locker room and a respected worker who has improved greatly in his two years with the organization. He attended the Lakers’ Las Vegas Summer League win Saturday night and is a part of their veteran minicamp that began Monday.
The Lakers drafted Bronny late in the second round in 2024 and in his two seasons, he has worked hard to develop his game to prove he was a worthy selection. Bronny has thrived during his time with the organization’s G League affiliate and became an option off the bench for JJ Redick in the first round of the 2026 playoffs when the team was shorthanded. He held his own in limited minutes during the series win over the Houston Rockets.
While LeBron and Bronny teaming up on the Lakers to become the first father-son duo in NBA and postseason history provided plenty of special moments, it would also be cool to now see them defending each other as opponents if Junior remains in purple and gold.
Given the Lakers’ lack of perimeter defense and toughness on the roster, Bronny could again find his way into Redick’s rotation if he continues to progress as a player and certainly could outplay his minimum rookie-level contract.
LeBron has not yet narrowed down his options in free agency, but the favorite all along has been returning to the Cleveland Cavaliers for a third stint, trying to make one last run at a championship in his home town.
If LeBron does end up on the Cavaliers, they are reportedly holding a roster spot open in case Bronny wants to join him.
Considering Bronny is under contract for potentially two more seasons and appears to be someone the Lakers are happy to keep, the Cavaliers or wherever LeBron ends up would likely need to send some sort of draft asset to acquire him.
