The Milwaukee Bucks recently emerged as a potential trade suitor for Dallas Mavericks guard D’Angelo Russell, according to HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto, but that interest was brief.

NBA insider Marc Stein reported that Milwaukee’s willingness to pursue Russell hinged on him declining his player option and returning on a minimum deal, a scenario that quickly cooled any realistic momentum.

Russell has little reason to consider declining his option. He is seeing a career low 19 minutes per game, and his production has followed that reduced role. With limited momentum heading into free agency and a soft market expected this summer, it makes far more sense for him to secure the guaranteed $5.97 million rather than leave money on the table.

D’Angelo Russell’s fit with the Bucks

The Mavericks guard might have approached things differently if the Bucks were clearly in contention, giving him a chance to showcase his skills on a winning team and potentially secure a bigger payday. Instead, Milwaukee is sliding in the standings as Giannis Antetokounmpo stays sidelined and trade speculation around the team continues to intensify.

Russell’s refusal to waive his player option does not rule out a trade, but it comes with one clear condition. If the Dallas Mavericks are willing to give up draft picks to take on Russell’s contract in exchange for expiring deals, it could work in Milwaukee’s favor. With the Bucks low on assets, a couple of second-round selections would add valuable flexibility for future moves.

The Bucks could use a boost in the backcourt with Kevin Porter Jr. sidelined by injury, and a former All-Star like Russell could provide a low-risk option to help fill the void in the meantime.

A few days remain before the NBA Trade Deadline, and no opportunities have been completely closed. Still, unless the Bucks or Russell change their stance, a trade appears unlikely.
