Cavaliers legend Campy Russell will not be returning to his usual studio duties on Bally Sports Ohio broadcasts this season, the team announced.

After 18 seasons, Russell “will transition his full attention on continuing to develop the highly successful Cavs Legends Program that he leads in his role as the Cavaliers’ Director of Alumni Relations,” the release read.

“Under his leadership, the Cavs have been able to engage and reengage several greats, establish a more formal alumni ambassador program and celebrate the accomplishments of select legends through the Cleveland Cavaliers Wall of Honor.”

Russell, 72, was a star forward for the Cavs from 1974-80, before returning in 1984-85 to finish his career. He was a key member of the Miracle of Richfield team that won over Cleveland and made pro basketball relevant in the city for perhaps the first time.

I also consider him a close personal friend and mentor in the broadcast business from my time at Fox Sports Ohio.
