Carmelo Anthony has had some brilliant seasons in the NBA, but few would have expected him to give the answer he did.
Carmelo Anthony is one of the greatest scorers in NBA history. The #3 overall pick in the 2003 NBA Draft came in and immediately made an impact.
Anthony got advice from Michael Jordan that allowed him to become an excellent scorer. And over the years, he would thrill fans with his brilliant offensive output.
NBA legend Phil Jackson felt Carmelo could be a scorer like Jordan and Kobe Bryant if he had the right tools around him.
For all the brilliant scoring seasons he had, Carmelo feels his best NBA season came when he had his lowest scoring average.
Carmelo Anthony spoke recently with CTRL The Narrative at an event. When discussing his best season in the NBA, he named his final year with the LA Lakers.
While his scoring numbers were at their lowest that season, Anthony pointed to his efficiency and field goal percentage being the best in his career.
“In all honesty, my best year that I’ve ever had was with the Lakers. When you look at the numbers and the efficiency and field goal percent, we’re in a game of numbers now and analytics.
“So if you look at analytics, the Lakers’ year was one of my best years out of 19 seasons.
“New York was more refined and more intellectual, more of a student of the game and thought the game out more so than the physical game.”
While we don’t have access to the advanced statistics, a quick look at his field goal percentage over the years shows that Carmelo Anthony didn’t have his best season with the LA Lakers.
In fact, Carmelo Anthony had 11 seasons where he shot better than 44.1% from the field, the percentage he averaged with the Lakers.
Furthermore, his averages on the LA Lakers were lower than what he averaged from the field throughout his career, shooting 44.7% during his time in the NBA.
Anthony has every right to be proud of his stint with the Lakers. But compared to some of his best seasons, it doesn’t compare.
