The Cleveland Cavaliers have been urged to sign Malcolm Brogdon since Darius Garland is expected to miss the start of next season recovering from left foot surgery.

Garland had surgery Monday to repair the left big toe injury that troubled him during the 2025 playoffs and is expected to miss four to five months.

Brogdon becomes an unrestricted free agent this offseason.

“With the point guard department seeing vacancies on the roster, the Cavaliers could benefit from signing Brogdon on a minimum deal,” Siddhant Gupta of Fadeaway World wrote. “As a backup playmaker and secondary defender, the 32-year-old could shore up the backcourt rotation until Garland recovers and returns to the floor.”

According to Joe Vardon of The Athletic, Garland could miss the Cavaliers’ first 10 games of next season.

Brogdon played in 24 games for the Washington Wizards this season. He averaged 12.7 points, 3.8 rebounds and 4.1 assists while shooting 43.3% from the field, 28.6% from beyond the arc and 88.0% from the free-throw line.

Brogdon has played for the Milwaukee Bucks, Indiana Pacers, Boston Celtics, Portland Trail Blazers and Wizards. He won the 2016-17 Rookie of the Year Award with the Bucks and the 2022-23 Sixth Man of the Year Award with the Celtics.

The 32-year-old Brogdon has career averages of 15.3 points, 4.1 rebounds and 4.7 assists in 463 NBA games.

The Cavaliers were the No. 1 seed in the East this year. They swept the Miami Heat in the first round of the playoffs but lost to the Indiana Pacers in the conference semifinals in five games.

Cleveland hasn’t advanced past the second round of the playoffs since acquiring Donovan Mitchell from the Utah Jazz in 2022.
