Cavaliers guard Darius Garland underwent surgery on his injured big toe and will be sidelined for about four to five months, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic.
Garland suffered the injury during the first-round playoff series against the Miami Heat, missed the first two games against the Indiana Pacers in the second round, and then tried to play through it. The Cavs were eliminated by Indiana in five games.
Since then, he’s been the subject of trade rumors, though it’s believed the Cavs have not been active in looking to move on at this point. President of basketball operations Koby Altman said at the end of the season that the goal is to keep the nucleus of the team together.
But multiple reports have indicated the Cavs are “open” to moving Garland and perhaps others should the right offer come along. The timeframe given by Charania indicates that Garland could miss training camp and perhaps the start of next season.
The Cavaliers finished 64-18 for the best record in the Eastern Conference.
Garland had a strong individual season, earning his second All-Star nod while averaging 20.6 points and 6.7 assists per game on efficient shooting splits (.472/.401/.878). He also appeared in a career-high 75 regular-season games. The injury clearly impacted his effectiveness vs. the Pacers.
