The Cavaliers could have another veteran wing in mind as they continue putting the finishing touches on their roster.
Veteran free agent Bruce Brown has been mentioned as a possible option for Cleveland, according to Terry Pluto of Cleveland.com.
“I heard veteran free agent Bruce Brown mentioned in connection to the Cavs,” Pluto said during a recent appearance on the Scarlet To The Land podcast.
That’s hardly an indication that anything is imminent. But Brown would make some sense as the Cavs consider their options for what is expected to become their final open roster spot.
Cleveland acquired Cam Whitmore as part of the multi-team trade that brought Peyton Watson from Denver, though Whitmore isn’t expected to be around for long. Once his situation is resolved, the Cavs would have room to add another player.
Brown, 30, spent last season with the Nuggets, appearing in all 82 games and averaging 7.9 points, 3.9 rebounds and 2.1 assists in 24.4 minutes. He shot 38.5 percent from beyond the arc, albeit on limited attempts.
He is perhaps best remembered for his first stint in Denver, when he became a valuable piece of the Nuggets’ 2023 championship team.
Brown isn’t necessarily a specialist, and that’s part of his appeal. He can handle the ball some, defend multiple positions and fit into different lineup combinations without needing the offense built around him.
He also has some familiarity with Cleveland’s personnel, having previously played alongside James Harden and Jarrett Allen in Brooklyn and, more recently, Watson in Denver.
Again, Pluto’s comment sounded more like a name to keep in mind than a suggestion that a signing is close.
But with Brown still available and the Cavs potentially having a roster spot to fill, he’s one worth watching.
