The Boston Celtics are in the middle of a roster overhaul this offseason. They have already traded Kristaps Porzingis and Jrue Holiday this summer so that they could get under the second apron.
Luke Kornet also signed with the Spurs, so they don't have a starting center. They also need some help at forward with Jayson Tatum missing all of next year with a torn Achilles.
In order to do that, the Celtics are hoping to get some young players who can step up and take some minutes. That's why they just added Kenneth Lofton Jr. to their Summer League roster.
Lofton Jr. will join the Celtics' Summer League roster as one of the few guys who have played for multiple NBA teams.
Former #Grizzlies and #76ers big man Kenneth Lofton Jr. has been added to the #Celtics summer league roster, according to league source.

Lofton Jr. looked like one of the better young forwards in the league when he was with the Grizzlies during his rookie year. He played with them last year, too.
The Celtics are looking for guys who have been good enough to play for multiple teams but are also still young enough to play in the Summer League. Lofton Jr. fits that bill.
There's not a very good chance that Lofton Jr. actually gets into the rotation for the Celtics unless he has a big Summer League. Still, he's auditioning for all of the other teams around the league, as well.
When he has gotten minutes in the NBA, he has shown the ability to defend on the perimeter at a high level. While he might not have a great offensive skill set yet, he needs some minutes to develop his game.

Boston doesn't have a lot of young guys developing behind their main group of rotation guys. Baylor Scheierman and Neemias Queta are the only two young guys who have a chance to get real minutes this year.
Lofton Jr. is hoping to at least make the roster so that he has a shot to play for a team that can be really good in the next couple of years.
In his NBA career, Lofton Jr. is averaging 4.8 points, two rebounds, and 1.2 assists per game.
