The Boston Celtics failed to trade for Giannis Antetokounmpo, with the Miami Heat outbidding them at the eleventh hour.
The Celtics offered a trade package centered on Jaylen Brown, who's now indirectly available after news broke that he was the odd man out.
However, as good a player as Brown is, it looks like the Celtics are overvaluing the former Finals MVP.
According to NBA insider Shams Charania, the Celtics want four first-round picks for Brown, and teams don't want anything to do with him at that price.
“I’m told they’ve asked multiple teams for up to four first-round picks,” Charania said. “…I can’t find a team right now that is willing at this moment to give up that amount of draft capital. So then it just becomes, are Brad Stevens and that front office fine trading away Jaylen Brown for, you know, potentially less than that?”
Ironically, Brown might be the best player available at that price range. Guys like Rudy Gobert, Desmond Bane and Mikal Bridges have been gone for that type of return, though their teams have ultimately faced backlash for that decision.
That said, the New York Knicks just won a championship with Bridges as a crucial contributor, though that doesn't mean he was worth as much capital at the time.
Brown is a very good player; a potential MVP candidate, even. That said, with his big contract and how some of those blockbuster deals have aged, it's understandable that some teams might be hesitant to pull the trigger at that price range.
