Joe Mazzulla’s relentless pursuit of improvement doesn’t stop when the NBA offseason begins. As the Boston Celtics gear up for the 2026-27 campaign, the reigning NBA Coach of the Year was recently spotted training at the renowned Xtreme Couture gym in Las Vegas. Shared by MMA insider Ariel Helwani, the footage captured Mazzulla working through intense pad drills and grappling sessions under acclaimed MMA coach Eric Nicksick.
The Celtics coach looked every bit as committed to combat sports as he is to basketball. Mazzulla has embraced Brazilian jiu-jitsu and MMA training for nearly five years. He often visits local gyms during Celtics road trips to maintain his routine. The offseason regimen isn’t simply about staying fit, too. Mazzulla has frequently credited combat sports with helping shape his coaching philosophy. He has previously drawn parallels between a fighter’s discipline, composure and mental resilience and the demands of leading an NBA team.

His ongoing collaboration with Nicksick reflects that mindset. The two regularly exchange ideas about preparation, decision-making under pressure and building championship habits. As such, Mazzulla continues to reinforce the culture he expects from his players by pushing himself well beyond the basketball court.
His coaching career has been one of the NBA’s fastest success stories. After joining the Celtics as an assistant in 2019, he became interim head coach in 2022. Mazzulla guided Boston to the 2024 NBA championship, becoming the youngest coach to win a title since 1970. He followed that accomplishment by capturing the 2026 NBA Coach of the Year award despite navigating a season impacted by Jayson Tatum’s Achilles injury. Including the playoffs, Mazzulla owns an outstanding 274-111 career record. That gives him the highest winning percentage among coaches with at least 200 games on an NBA sideline.
