It was a disappointing season for the Sacramento Kings and they now have a crucial offseason ahead of them.
Of course, the Kings already hired a new general manager and made Doug Christie their new head coach, but they now have some key decisions to make regarding their roster after missing the playoffs.
Both Domantas Sabonis and DeMar DeRozan have been in recent trade rumors and it is likely that one of them will be moved this summer as Sacramento tries to retool their roster.
On Monday, Boston Celtics legend Paul Pierce was on Kevin Garnett’s podcast, KG Certified , where he had a trade suggestion for both the Kings and the Denver Nuggets involving DeRozan.
“For the next five years, if you got the best player, you got to put some pieces,” Pierce said. “I feel like if they had a DeMar DeRozan with that team right now, with Joker (Nikola Jokic). He don’t need to be the best player or the second-best player every night. He is going to give you more than what Michael Porter Jr. gave you.”
This is a bold suggestion by Pierce but one that does make sense for both sides as they both try to retool their rosters this summer.
For the Nuggets, adding DeRozan next to Jokic, Jamal Murray and Aaron Gordon could help them take another step forward and return to championship form after back-to-back second-round exits.
On the other side, the Kings would move on from DeRozan and likely receive Porter Jr. plus other assets in return.
This trade would fit Sacramento's timeline much better than DeRozan due to their core being young and still developing while DeRozan would be able to compete for a championship in Denver next to Jokic.
Of course, the Nuggets have been unwilling to move on from Porter Jr. in the past but after another disappointing playoff exit, they may be willing to move him this summer to add a player that would improve their chances of winning a title, which would also help the Kings.
