Chris Finch believes the Minnesota Timberwolves need playmaking and defense from their new signing who is known for scoring.

The Minnesota Timberwolves face a lot of pressure heading into the 2025-26 NBA season. After reaching the Western Conference Finals the last two years, fans expect them to overcome that hurdle.

The Timberwolves have put a lot of their faith in Anthony Edwards, who is primed for an MVP run next season.

The Timberwolves are asking Edwards to be a great defender. But they also need someone to be a reliable playmaker.

Well, that’s exactly what head coach Chris Finch wants from one of the Timberwolves’ newest stars, and he liked what he saw in their first preseason game.

Chris Finch calls on Bones Hyland to be playmaker for Minnesota Timberwolves

Chris Finch spoke to reporters ahead of their second preseason game against the Cleveland Cavaliers on Tuesday night.

When discussing Bones Hyland’s strong showing in their opener, Finch said that he wants Hyland to be more than a scorer, acknowledging his playmaking and defensive skills can be a boost for them.

“The thing about Bones is – we just need him to be who he is. He’s a range shooter, can create his own shot. He’s an underrated pick-and-roll player, an underrated playmaker.

“He’s always been such an explosive scorer, but he’s got a ton of ball skills. We really needed him to pick up some playmaking duties. He did a good job of that.

“We’re just on him all the time to keep fighting on defense. He’s got long arms; he can really be better there. He’s shown it. He’s a guy you can swing the ball to and make a 28-footer.”

Minnesota Timberwolves are relying on role players to deliver at a high level

The Minnesota Timberwolves have some strong players in their starting lineup. But in today’s NBA, depth is critical.

This is where the Timberwolves face a make-or-break situation. Some of their rotation pieces will need to be stronger if they want to make a championship run.

Joan Berringer has impressed Mike Conley and the Timberwolves with his strong Summer League and preseason outings.

But Hyland isn’t the only young star Finch has high hopes for. Finch asked Rob Dillingham to follow their easy plan and fit the role their side needs.

If the Timberwolves’ rotation pieces can deliver at their highest levels, then Anthony Edwards can help lead the Timberwolves to an NBA championship.
