Chris Paul is retiring at the end of the 2025-26 NBA season, ending an illustrious career as a point guard. After announcing his retirement, Paul managed to set a record almost immediately, an accolade that only he has achieved.

Since the 2005-06 NBA season, Chris Paul has been the perfect template for a pure point guard. Now that he is in his 21st season, Paul has decided to retire at the end of the 2025-26 campaign. It is the end of a legendary career, as he is one of the best point guards in NBA history.

Although he did not win a championship, Paul is still well-respected for his contributions to the sport. Paul managed to stand out as one of the best players in the league in an era of score-first guards. With the Los Angeles Clippers, he was a fantastic playmaker who made them contenders. He loved the Clippers enough to choose them for his final season before retirement.

After announcing his retirement, Paul ensured he got a unique achievement. He helped the Clippers beat the Charlotte Hornets with a three-point, four-rebound, and eight-assist performance. James Harden had a standout 55-point night, but Paul set a new NBA record.

Paul’s new accolade after announcing his retirement

Paul is alone with a new statistical accolade after he grabbed his fourth and final rebound of the game. He is now the only player in NBA history who has scored 20,000+ points, 12,000+ assists, and 6,000+ rebounds.

Considering he is one of three players to get over 12,000 assists, he is the only ball-handler to earn this accolade. LeBron James is close, as he has 11,596 assists during his NBA career. Russell Westbrook is the nearest player to James, having accumulated over 10,000 assists in his career.

In terms of points and rebounds, James and Westbrook already passed the threshold for this unique record. However, they must do their best to catch Paul and his fantastic playmaking ability.

James could reach that assist total, considering he is still playing at a high level. He might not have the same playmaking reps as before due to Luka Doncic’s arrival on the Los Angeles Lakers, but he can catch Paul for this record. In the meantime, Paul is alone with this record, and he has a lot of time left in the season to add onto his totals.

Paul will retire as a true legend of the sport

Now that Paul has confirmed that he is stepping away from the NBA, people are looking back at his legacy, which has cemented him as one of the best point guards. Some might disagree, but Paul is the gold standard for smart playmakers, leaders, and floor generals.

Stephen Curry might be the more successful point guard in the same era, but Paul held his own. Most NBA players respect Paul for how he kept standing out despite being a 6’0″ point guard. He had impressive point guard skills, but he also found ways to keep up with larger players.

Do you think this will be LeBron James’ final season?

It will be a sad day for the NBA when Paul retires, but this last hurrah with the Clippers is a good send-off. He will not get the same retirement tour as Kobe Bryant, but more people will start to appreciate Paul and his achievements in the league.

As one of the most well-rounded point guards in NBA history, Paul will be an influential figure for years to come. All the smaller players have learned from what Paul did to stand out in a league filled with giants. The Clippers now face an eventful few months ahead, as they have Paul’s retirement hanging over them.
