The Cleveland Cavaliers couldn’t live up to their hype in the 2025 NBA playoffs. After a promising 2024-25 season, Cleveland secured the No. 1 spot in the Eastern Conference with a 64-18 record. In the postseason, they had a great first-round outing against the Miami Heat. They did not show mercy and ended the best-of-seven series with a clean sweep.
Unfortunately for the Cavaliers, the team couldn’t fight off the Indiana Pacers in the second round. In just five games, the top team in the East crumbled and was eliminated from the playoffs. Most of the blame was because of some starters’ health. Evan Mobley, Darius Garland and De’Andre Hunter all missed games during their series against the Pacers.
However, a former Cavaliers player believes there’s one more reason why they lost.
According to Channing Frye, the Cavaliers need to change their starting center, Jarrett Allen. The 2016 champion criticized Allen on the latest episode of “Road Trippin’,” his podcast with former teammate Richard Jefferson, 2008 champion Kendrick Perkins and Allie Clifton.
“Jarrett Allen is not a playoff big man,” Frye said. “He is not physically dominant, he is not aggressive. Is he a good dude? Absolutely. Is he a great regular season All-Star-caliber player? Absolutely. … He is a great NBA player… But if you want to win a chip, no other big man respects him.”
I've been saying this about Jarrett Allen now for 3 years now. This rant by Channing Frye is must-listen. Love the man. Love his regular season play. But Allen is not a playoff big man.

Offensively, Allen has never been a high-scoring player for any of the teams he played for. During their series against the Pacers, the big man averaged 12.8 points, seven rebounds and 1.2 blocks. This includes his Game 2 outing, where he had 22 points, 12 rebounds and three blocks.
However, Frye isn’t the only former NBA player who shares this thought about the Cleveland Cavaliers’ big man.
While Jarrett Allen has proved to be a star in the league, some think he’s the ideal center for the Cleveland Cavaliers. Former NBA star DeMarcus Cousins shares the same criticism about Allen. However, he doesn’t think it’s time for the organization to trade for him.
On Tuesday’s episode of FanDuel TV’s “Run It Back,” Cousins said that the Cavs might need another big man next to Allen to help them next season.
“I do think they should add one more good big man,” Cousins said, “I don’t think Jarrett Allen is the ultimate answer as far as winning a championship as a big. I do think they need to add an addition al big that can bring an impact to the game.”

@boogiecousins says that the Cavs need to upgrade at Center in order to take that next step and compete for a championship.

The Cavaliers, on the other hand, feel secure with Allen as their starting center. The organization’s president of basketball operations, Koby Altman, believes in having the one-time All-Star as the man in the middle for the team.
