Clippers name Trent Redden interim president of basketball operations

The Clippers have named general manager Trent Redden their interim president of basketball operations while Lawrence Frank serves a six-month suspension, the team announced.

Assistant general manager Mark Hughes will assume Redden’s GM duties during that period, according to ESPN.

The changes were revealed in a video message from interim governor and CEO John Gibson, who is overseeing the organization while owner Steve Ballmer serves a one-year suspension.

Los Angeles now has interim leadership at the top of both its ownership and basketball operations structures following the NBA’s salary-cap circumvention investigation.

Redden joined the organization in 2017 after spending more than a decade with the Cavaliers. He was promoted from assistant general manager to GM in 2023.

Hughes also arrived in 2017 after working as an NBA assistant coach and scout following his playing career.

The league suspended Frank for six months and Ballmer for one year after an investigation conducted by the law firm Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz. The Clippers were also fined $30 million and stripped of five first-round draft picks.

Ballmer said that while he continues to disagree with portions of the findings, the organization has accepted the penalties, paid the fine and intends to move forward.

Redden will now guide the basketball operation through one of the most turbulent stretches in franchise history, with Hughes handling the club’s day-to-day general manager responsibilities beneath him.
