The Golden State Warriors started their 2025-26 NBA season off strong in their season opener as they defeated the Los Angeles Lakers on the road.

Golden State was able to get off to a solid start in Tuesday’s game and they then used a strong third quarter to pick up the 119-109 victory.

Jimmy Butler led the way for Golden State in their victory as the veteran forward recorded 31 points, five rebounds and four assists.

Stephen Curry added 23 points and four assists of his own while Jonathan Kuminga put together a solid performance with 17 points, nine rebounds and six assists.

With their performance against the Lakers, the Warriors showed that they could be a major threat in the Western Conference this season and they will try to pick up back-to-back victories on Thursday night as they host the Denver Nuggets.

Colin Cowherd Urges Warriors to Trade for Giannis

While the Warriors opened the season with a strong win over the Lakers, Fox Sports’ Colin Cowherd wasn’t entirely impressed with their performance.

On his show "The Herd with Colin Cowherd", he urged Golden State to make a trade with the Milwaukee Bucks to help them compete for a championship this season.

“Jimmy Butler is a fling. He's not a phase... I would trade Jimmy Butler, Jonathan Kuminga, and 4 first-round picks for Giannis (Antetokounmpo). And see if it's enough (to compete for a title),” Cowherd said.

This is a major statement by Cowherd as he believes that the Warriors will not be able to compete for a championship this season with their current aging core and that they should instead send Butler, Kuminga and four first-round picks for Giannis.

Of course, the Warriors have been linked to Giannis over the past few seasons as the superstar forward continues to be in trade rumors with his future in Milwaukee uncertain.

Despite this, the Bucks have shown little interest in moving Giannis, though that could change ahead of this season’s trade deadline and it is clear that Cowherd believes Golden State should look to make a move for him.

While that may be the case, the Bucks would have to include other players in Cowherd’s proposed trade to match salaries and Milwaukee may also want more in return from the Warriors in a potential deal.

Golden State also appears to be set on trying to compete for a title this season with their current core led by Curry, Butler and Green and while Kuminga is expected to be traded ahead of the deadline, the Warriors will likely use him to add more depth to their roster.

Because of this, it is highly unlikely that the Warriors will pull off a trade for Giannis like Cowherd believes they should do, though pairing the star forward alongside Curry and Green could make Golden State into serious contenders this season.
