Damian Lillard did not hesitate when asked if he considers himself the second-best three-point shooter of all time behind Stephen Curry.
The discussion started when a fan argued that Lillard would not even put himself ahead of Ray Allen. Lillard responded with a simple answer that made his view clear.
It is a bold statement, but it is not without merit. Allen has the more traditional resume, while Lillard’s case is built on range, difficulty and how much of his shooting comes off the dribble.
In a recent Damian Lillard X post, the Portland Trail Blazers star responded to a fan who said he would not call himself the second-best shooter ever.
“Yes, I would,” Dame wrote.
The fan’s argument was that Allen should be considered second behind Curry, and that Lillard would not put himself ahead of Allen in that conversation.
Lillard clearly disagreed. It was only a three-word response, but it said enough about how he views his place among the greatest shooters in NBA history.
Statistically, Allen still has a strong argument as he has 2,973 regular-season threes, while Lillard has 2,804, putting the NBA legend ahead in all-time makes.
What gives Lillard’s claim substance is the type of shots he takes. Allen was an elite movement shooter and one of the purest catch-and-shoot players ever, but Lillard’s shot selection has often been far more demanding.
Lillard has built his reputation on deep pull-ups, logo-range shots, and high-pressure threes that defenses know are coming. That is why Curry is the clear No. 1 in almost every version of the debate.
But beyond Curry, the debate depends on what matters most. Allen has the longevity and total makes, while Lillard has the self-created distance shooting that helped shape the modern point guard era.
Lillard is not wrong to believe he belongs in that spot. He just has to win a debate where Allen’s resume, Klay Thompson’s efficiency and Reggie Miller’s era-adjusted impact all still have strong supporters.
His answer made one thing clear: Dame does not see himself as just part of the conversation. He sees himself right behind Curry.
