Darius Garland ends rumors surrounding a potential trade

The Cleveland Cavaliers' backcourt pairing of Darius Garland and Donovan Mitchell hasn't always looked like a good fit. Both are ball-dominant guards who need a significant number of touches to be effective. However, Garland has developed as an off-ball threat in recent seasons. 

Cleveland recently inked Mitchell to a multiyear contract extension. On May 16, The Athletic's Shams Charania reported that Garland's future in Ohio would likely end if the franchise chose to stick with the All-Star scorer.

"Furthermore, rival executives believe the Cavs will have to seriously evaluate the fit of Mitchell and Garland and ultimately may have to choose one or the other," Charania reported. "Should Mitchell decide to stay long term, sources briefed on the matter say Garland’s representation, Klutch Sports CEO Rich Paul, would have a conversation with Cavs officials on potentially finding a new home for the one-time All-Star."

However, during a recent interview with Chris Fedor of Cleveland.com, Garland rubbished those rumors.

“I don’t want to be traded,” Garland told Cleveland.com. “Those are just rumors.”

Garland and Mitchell have the potential to be one of the best offensive guard duos in the NBA. Mitchell is among the best clutch players in the NBA. Garland's vast skill set makes him an ideal fit next to a high-level scorer, assuming he gets enough touches to initiate and create offense within the half-court. 

Kenny Atkinson will be leading the Cavaliers next season. He's taken over from J.B. Bickerstaff, who was released by the franchise following its second-round exit at the hands of the Boston Celtics. Atkinson favors a high-tempo offense based on solid spacing. Both Garland and Mitchell are at their best when penetrating off the dribble and forcing defensive rotations. They can both hit catch-and-shoot attempts from multiple spots on the floor. 

Garland's statement should end speculation about his future. Cleveland's core rotation is locked up for at least the next two years. Now, it must take the next step in its development and aim for the Eastern Conference Finals.
