Derrick Rose, the former Chicago Bulls star and youngest MVP in NBA history, recently reflected on his career-altering ACL injury in an emotional retelling on the "Out The Mud" podcast.

Rose, whose explosive athleticism made him one of the most electrifying players of his era, recounted the pain of that pivotal moment in the 2012 NBA postseason.

Rose’s injury occurred during a playoff game against the Philadelphia 76ers when he attempted a routine play. At the time, he was the reigning NBA MVP, making the Bulls serious championship contenders.

The torn ACL in his left knee sidelined him for the entire 2012-13 season and marked the end of his meteoric rise. Once destined to be one of the greatest players to grace the court, Rose’s path was forever altered.

“I get out the machine, they tell me that it’s torn. I f—king break down crying with my mom there,” he shared with Zach Randolph and Tony Allen on their podcast. Rose was teary-eyed, revealing the emotional toll of an injury that derailed his career and shattered his dreams.

The injury forced Rose into a grueling battle to rebuild both his physical and mental strength. Subsequent injuries, including a torn meniscus in 2013, compounded his struggles. Though his peak years were cut short, Rose’s resilience shone through.

He still delivered memorable moments later in his career, such as his emotional 50-point game with the Minnesota Timberwolves in 2018—a testament to his perseverance.

Speaking candidly on the podcast, Rose acknowledged the lingering pain of that fateful day, both physical and emotional. His journey may not have gone as imagined, but Rose’s legacy endures. The Chicago Bulls are set to retire Rose's jersey during the 2025-26 NBA season.
