The Denver Nuggets' season came to an end Sunday afternoon after a 125-93 loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder.
This was the second series in a row that the Nuggets played seven games. With their lack of depth and Aaron Gordon's hamstring injury, wear and tear took its course.
While the Nuggets did everything they could to make it hard on Oklahoma City, pushing the series to seven games, the Thunder proved too much to handle.
When the Nuggets announced they were firing Michael Malone just ahead of the NBA Playoffs, many around the league were shocked.
However, those who were familiar with and close to the situation knew about the discourse between Malone, some of the players, and the front office.
Sam Amick of The Athletic had some additional details on the situation.
"One thing that ended up tripping Malone up at the end was that he was giving the star treatment to Joker, to Jamal, and to Russ," said Amick. "And that locker room was like 'Wait a minute. 2 of these things are not like the other.'"

Nikola Jokic is a three-time MVP and an NBA Finals Champion. Russell Westbrook is a former MVP winner, but not nearly the player he used to be. Jamal Murray is a champion and has his moments, but has never cracked an All-Star team.
The Nuggets will now head into the offseason with relative uncertainty. It remains to be seen whether the Nuggets believe interim coach David Adelman did enough to become the head coach full-time or if they'll bring in someone from the outside.
Denver will also be looking for a new general manager, as Calvin Booth was fired the same day as Malone. Josh Kroenke appointed Ben Tenzer as the interim GM following Booth's firing.
