Disgraced Former Milwaukee Bucks Head Coach Looking at NBA Comeback with Latest Job Interview

The Milwaukee Bucks famously fired former head coach Mike Budenholzer following the 2022-23 NBA season. Even though he had led Milwaukee to its first NBA Championship in 50 seasons during the 2020-21 season, he had failed to lead the Bucks anywhere close to a position where they could win another one.

After Budenholzer was fired, Bucks fans had a long list of coaches that they wanted the team to pursue. Among these was Kenny Atkinson, who is now the head coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers (a team that won 64 games this past season). Nick Nurse, the former Toronto Raptors head coach who bested Budenholzer and the Bucks in the Eastern Conference Finals in 2019, was also a popular candidate among fans.

Of course, Milwaukee hired neither. Instead, they hired one of Nurse’s top assistants, Adrian Griffin, to be their next head coach.

Adrian Griffin Did Not Last Long with the Milwaukee Bucks

Months after the Bucks hired Griffin to be their next head coach, they landed All-Star point guard Damian Lillard, one of the 75 greatest players of all time, via trade. Of course, Jrue Holiday was included in the trade that brough Lillard to Milwaukee, meaning that Griffin inherited a roster very different from the one he had been planning on having all offseason.

With the addition of Lillard, Bucks fans expected the team to compete for an NBA Championship despite Griffin not having any previous head coaching experience. Unfortunately, though, that did not happen.

Griffin’s tenure with Milwaukee got off to a rather strange and, well, negative start. Former Bucks head coach Terry Stotts had been hired by the team to help run the offense and give Griffin advice on how to be an NBA head coach. However, Stotts resigned his position during training camp after he and Griffin got into a verbal altercation during practice.

While Milwaukee won a fair amount of games during Griffin’s short stint as the team’s head coach, it was obvious early on that things were not right. Rumors of frustration and poor communication abounded and, despite the fact the Bucks were 30-13 and in first place in the Eastern Conference, Griffin was fired.

Milwaukee subsequently replaced him with Doc Rivers, who is currently the team’s head coach (much to the dismay of fans).

Former Milwaukee Bucks Head Coach Adrian Griffin Is Trying to Get Another NBA Job

Griffin did not coach at all in the NBA last season, instead collecting his paychecks from the Bucks as coaching salaries are guaranteed, even if the coach is fired before the contract ends.

However, it appears that Griffin wants to get back into the league’s coaching ranks, though not as a head coach. Per a report by Matt Levine of Sports Illustrated, the former Bucks coach is interviewing for an assistant position with the Memphis Grizzlies:

“Griffin is reportedly interviewing for a job with the Memphis Grizzlies. The former Bucks coach would take a role on Tuomas Iisalo’s coaching staff for next season.

“This could be the first step for Griffin to get back into the coaching circle. Griffin likely wants another chance to be a head coach, and this could be a good route to making that happen.”

Prior to being hired by Milwaukee, Griffin had been an assistant coach in the NBA for 15 seasons. This could be a great way for him to get his foot back in the door and, perhaps, help him land another head coaching job sometime down the line.
