Uncertainty continues to surround Giannis Antetokounmpo’s future in Milwaukee, and former Bucks head coach Doc Rivers has almost nothing to clarify on the matter. Though he offered a candid assessment of the situation as speculation intensified.

Speaking about the noise that followed the team throughout the season, Rivers acknowledged the disconnect between what’s happening internally and external narratives.

“The whole Giannis stuff, it just wasn’t a whole lot of fun,” he said. When you’re around Giannis, and then what you hear on the outside, it was two different worlds. I don’t think Giannis knows if he wants to stay or not. I also don’t know if the organization knows one way or not either.”

The comments come after a disappointing campaign that saw Milwaukee finish 37-50, falling well short of preseason championship expectations. Injuries, internal tension, and inconsistent performances derailed what was expected to be a contending roster.

The situation has only grown more complex in recent weeks. Antetokounmpo played just 36 games amid injury concerns, while reports suggested frustration on both sides, between the franchise and its cornerstone player.

At one point, the superstar himself admitted uncertainty about his future, saying, “We’ll see,” when asked about what lies ahead.

However, soon after, Rivers’ departure only added to the team’s tanking difficulties. The Bucks are now searching for their third head coach in as many years.

Giannis Antetokounmpo Lists Qualities Of Bucks’ Ideal Coach

The Milwaukee Bucks are entering another offseason of change, and the search for a new head coach is already taking shape based on what Giannis Antetokounmpo values most in leadership.

Following Doc Rivers’ departure after a disappointing 2025-26 campaign, the conversation has quickly shifted toward identity and direction. While Antetokounmpo has not publicly outlined a detailed wishlist, teammate Bobby Portis offered insight into what the Greek Freak is looking for.

“Something that’s about culture. Something that’s about holding guys accountable… standing for the right things… creating a culture and identity,” Portis said during an appearance on FanDuel’s Run It Back.

The comments point to a broader issue that defined Milwaukee’s recent struggles. Despite entering the season with playoff expectations, the team failed to build consistency and ultimately missed the postseason. Over Rivers’ tenure, the Bucks managed just three playoff wins, a visible drop-off for a group that lifted the championship trophy in 2021.
