The Minnesota Timberwolves were crushed by the New York Knicks.

At one stage late in the 2025 playoffs, there was a possibility of a New York Knicks and Minnesota Timberwolves showdown in the Finals.

Both teams ended up losing their Conference Finals, and have had to reset this season.

Just minor tweaks in terms of personnel, but for the Knicks, a coaching change was the big switch.

In the first matchup between the two teams this season, Mike Brown’s Knicks came out on top, winning 137-114.

Donte DiVincenzo reflects on Timberwolves loss

The matchup was a special one for Timberwolves star Donte DiVincenzo, playing against his former team along with Julius Randle.

Both players were cast aside by the Knicks when the team traded for Karl-Anthony Towns at the start of last season.

DiVincenzo admitted after the defeat that the Timberwolves were struggling to bring it from night to night.

He told Jon Krawcynski: “Right now we’re a sometimes team. We need to be an always team in that regard.

“And we have the potential. We’re there. We know what it looks like and we just have to do it.”

Timberwolves built on strong defense

The Minnesota Timberwolves have reached the Western Conference Finals in two successive years. Chris Finch’s teams’ success has been built around their defense.

Bolstered by multiple-time DPOY Rudy Gobert, the Timberwolves have set a strong standard.

DiVincenzo’s comments are concerning because he knows the level that the team can reach, and they are not producing.

In some ways it is understandable because there is often a hangover for teams after going close to reaching success and coming up short.

Minnesota started last season badly, and went on to match their accomplishment from the year before.

DiVincenzo’s comments are concerning because it is clearly not an easy situation to remedy. If there was a quick on/off switch to raise the intensity, they would have found the solution.

Minnesota are .500 for the season with a 4-4 record, sitting in eighth place in the West.
