As the start of the 2025-26 NBA season nears, one player who remains unsigned is former NBA MVP Russell Westbrook.

Of course, Westbrook put together a solid season last year with the Denver Nuggets as he was able to bounce back after two disappointing seasons with both the Los Angeles Lakers and Los Angeles Clippers.

With his play last season in Denver, Westbrook proved that he could still be a key piece of a championship contending team either off the bench or in the starting lineup, but that has not amounted to much this offseason.

Instead, the 36-year-old guard has drawn little interest from teams around the NBA despite many teams being in need of guard depth.

While Westbrook has generated little interest, the Sacramento Kings have been a rumored suitor for him in free agency, though talks have quieted down over the past few months.

Due to this, it appears as though the former league MVP will not be on a roster to start the 2025-26 NBA season.

Kendrick Perkins Believes Westbrook Should be on a Team

Because of this, former Boston Celtics champion Kendrick Perkins, who was also a teammate of Westbrook’s on the Oklahoma City Thunder, recently made a bold statement about the veteran guard.

“He should be on somebody roster,” Perkins said about Westbrook on ESPN.

Of course, Perkins was Westbrook’s teammate on the Thunder and has mentioned all offseason that the veteran guard should be signed and he backed that up earlier this week.

Perkins makes a great point about his former teammate as Westbrook still has a lot to offer many teams around the NBA that are still in need of guard depth.

Last season, the 36-year-old guard averaged 13.3 points, 4.9 rebounds, 6.1 assists and 1.4 steals per game while shooting 44.9% from the field and 32.2% from three with the Nuggets.

With his performance last season, Westbrook proved that he could still play a key role either in the starting lineup or off the bench for many teams around the league as he is still a great scorer, rebounder and playmaker.

Despite this, the veteran guard has continued to draw little to no interest in free agency with the new season just weeks away, which has put his career in jeopardy.

While that may be the case, teams could begin to show interest during the season if one does not make a last-second push to sign him before the start of the new season.
