Former NBA Champion Makes Kevin Durant Trade Prediction

The Phoenix Suns could undergo major roster changes in the offseason after a regular season that ended in disappointment.

The Suns failed to make even the play-in tournament despite high hopes coming into the year led by the trio of Kevin Durant, Devin Booker, and Bradley Beal.

The Suns reportedly tried to shake things up at the NBA trade deadline by moving Durant or Beal, but nothing came to fruition.

Should the Suns try to move Durant in the offseason, former Pelicans big man Kendrick Perkins believes the Dallas Mavericks would be the best fit for the future Hall of Famer.

Speaking on ESPN's Get Up, Perkins said the Mavericks should "go all in" to get Durant in the offseason. "Durant could be the second or third option type guy behind Kyrie and AD."

Durant still has one year remaining at $54 million on his contract. The Mavericks already have $97 million committed to Kyrie Irving and Anthony Davis for next season. Irving is set to miss extended time in the 2025-26 season after suffering a torn ACL in March.

Irving and Durant famously linked up in Brooklyn from 2019 to 2023 before Durant was moved to Phoenix and Irving was traded to Dallas. In two full seasons together, the Nets went 92-62 in the regular season but only won one playoff series.

Before the Mavericks think about offseason plans, they are still in contention for a playoff spot. Dallas will play the Sacramento Kings in the ninth vs. tenth seed play-in tournament.

ESPN Insider Praises Rockets’ 'Unbelievable' Kevin Durant Trade

Heading into the 2025 offseason, it was clear that Kevin Durant wanted out of the Phoenix Suns. His two year stay in the Valley had failed miserably, and he was looking to join a team that was ready to compete for the title with him as centerpiece. In came the Houston Rockets with a blockbuster offer, sending Dillon Brooks, Jalen Green and a bunch of draft picks over to the Suns. KD is now a Rocket, and is the veteran superstar in a team full of young talents. As far as ESPN’s Tim Bontemps is concerned, it was a perfect trade for Houston, who have in particular, shipped off the reason they couldn’t get past the Golden State Warriors in Round 1 of the playoffs this year. Green is a phenomenal player, but lacked heavily in the scoring side of things against the Dubs. He shot below 30% from three, and that, Bontemps feels, helped the Steph Curry led franchise over the line. KD, on the other hand, is still elite at 36 years old. “That is an unbelievable upgrade for the Rockets,” Bontemps said on NBA on ESPN. “Big part of why Houston lost in the first round of the playoffs was Jalen Green simply wasn’t good enough as a scorer… under 30% from three, under 40% from the field..” “Kevin Durant, while he’s not the player he was in the past, he’s still a 50-40-90 guy, that’s an easy 25 on any given night,” he added. “He completely slots in the role as his team’s primary scorer.” Another player who went away to the Suns to make space for Durant was Brooks, a polarizing figure in the NBA. His fans love him, but opponents hate him and he’s just the kind of player winning teams need, someone willing to hustle and put it all on the line. Bontemps feels that the Rockets won’t miss him much, as there are players who can fill in for the Canadian. “Guys like Jabbari Smith, Amen Thompson and Tari Eason can easily fill in the minutes of Dillon Brooks, who was vacated by being part of that trade,” he said. Suns, as part of the Draft picks, also got Khaman Maluach, a South-Sudanese youngster who’s poised for big things in the NBA. But the Rockets wouldn’t mind. They have a mixture of youth and stardom, and that’s the real recipe for success.

All signs point to Yankees moving on from Anthony Volpe

With the trade for Ryan McMahon now complete, it would seem New York Yankees’ general manager Brian Cashman has fulfilled one of his three priorities. He can now cross third base off the list, which leaves the rotation and bullpen as his remaining priorities. However, according to one Yankees writer, Cashman might not be done with the infield. Chris Kirschner of The Athletic reported this after the McMahon trade: “The Yankees may not be done adding to their infield. A team source said the Yankees are interested in adding a right-handed hitter who could play the infield.” Kirschner adds that the Yankees have had interest in Willi Castro and Amed Rosario. But the question now is, how would another player fit in the Yankees’ infield? Needless to say, Paul Goldschmidt and Jazz Chisholm Jr. aren’t going anywhere, and McMahon is just getting there. That leaves the low-hanging fruit. Anthony Volpe has been at the center of controversy all this season. His 13 errors, many of which had come at make-or-break moments, amount to the second-highest total in the game. In addition, his bat has not been able to compensate, hitting .214/.286/.407 with 14 home runs. There was always a lot to like about Volpe. He won a Gold Glove in his rookie year, his power has always been promising and his speed is nothing to scoff at. Unfortunately, his glove has become a liability and his speed has also produced very few results. Volpe has swiped just 10 bags in 17 attempts. His power is the one thing that still has some upside, but it hasn’t been enough to justify a spot in the lineup. Both Castro and Rosario have been far more productive at the plate this season than Volpe. Kirschner doesn’t clarify how serious the Yankees are in their pursuit of another infielder, but that most likely isn’t available information. Having just turned 24, Volpe could still become the type of player that was expected from him as a top prospect. However, his recent performance has weighed heavily on his team’s efforts and it may be buying him a ticket out of the Bronx — or at least a spot on the bench.

NASCAR driver disqualified after Truck Series race at IRP

What was a third-place effort for Stewart Friesen in Friday's NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race at Indianapolis Raceway Park turned out to be all for naught. Friesen's No. 52 Toyota was disqualified in post-race inspection for failing front height measurement, relegating him to a last-place (35th) finish. The stage points he earned were also stripped. Friesen qualified 21st, but drove into the top five and was running second in the closing laps before he was passed by Corey Day. Friesen's team, Halmar Friesen Racing, issued a statement following the announcement. "The Halmer Friesen Racing team will be going to the NASCAR Appellate Board after our third-place disqualification in the TSport 200 race at Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park on July 25," the team said. "We believe the post-race heights disqualification was caused by a part malfunction that occurred during the race by circumstances out of our control." The DQ drops Friesen to 11th in the regular season standings, but the 42-year-old driver is already locked into the Craftsman Truck Series playoffs by his win at Michigan International Speedway on June 7. Layne Riggs won Friday's race at IRP. The Truck Series will return to action at Watkins Glen on Aug. 8.

Connor Zilisch drops not-so-subtle hint about his NASCAR future

Connor Zilisch is the hottest prospect in NASCAR at the moment, and it's widely speculated that he could move up to the NASCAR Cup Series in 2026. The 19-year-old driver seemed to confirm his NASCAR future during a news conference at Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Friday. "Next year, I think my best chance to win a race would be on a road course," Zilisch said. "The practice starts now, and that's going to be good for me." Zilisch is in the midst of his rookie season in the NASCAR Xfinity Series season, where he's won a series-leading four races and is second in the standings despite missing the May 3 race at Texas Motor Speedway. When it was announced that Daniel Suarez would leave Trackhouse Racing at the conclusion of the 2025 season, Zilisch — who is a Trackhouse development driver — immediately became the heavy favorite to take over Suarez's Cup Series ride. Zilisch has already made three Cup Series starts with Trackhouse this season, with a best finish of 11th coming at EchoPark Speedway on June 28. His next Cup Series start is slated for Aug. 10 at Watkins Glen — the same track where he won in his Xfinity Series debut in 2024. Zilisch has already proved himself to be a road course ace, and while winning as a Cup Series rookie is difficult, it wouldn't be surprising if his first Cup win came at a road course in 2026.
