Gregg Popovich appears to be making some slow but steady progress in his recovery.

The former San Antonio Spurs head coach was in attendance at the team’s practice on Monday. Video circulated online of Popovich sitting down in the background watching Spurs star Victor Wembanyama as Wembanyama got some shots up.

In the clip, Popovich was seated next to San Antonio forward Jeremy Sochan and seemed to gesture as part of his conversation with Sochan. Here is the video.

Popovich, now 76 years old, suffered a stroke before a game last November and had to take an indefinite leave of absence from the team (with assistant coach Mitch Johnson taking over as the Spurs’ interim coach). Then in May, Popovich announced that he would be stepping down as Spurs head coach as a result of the stroke, thereby ending his tenure after 29 seasons and five NBA championships and putting Johnson in charge on a full-time basis.

During his May press conference announcing the news, Popovich looked frail and had difficulty walking up to the podium to address reporters. That wasn’t surprising given that Popovich also suffered another medical incident just weeks prior to that press conference.

Popovich has since transitioned into a role as president of basketball operations for the Spurs, who went 34-48 overall last season. San Antonio fans will be happy to see that Popovich is staying close to the team and is also seemingly make solid progress in his recovery nearly a year after suffering the stroke.
