Guard Ty Jerome will miss at least four weeks after being diagnosed with a high-grade right calf strain, the Grizzlies announced. He’ll be reexamined in mid-November, per the team release.
Jerome suffered the injury in Friday’s preseason finale against Miami. It’s a tough break for Memphis, which signed the 28-year-old combo guard to a three-year, $27.7 million deal this summer using the room exception.
He was expected to play a key role in the backcourt rotation — but he now joins a growing injury list that includes Scotty Pippen Jr. (toe surgery), Zach Edey (ankle), and Brandon Clarke (knee). All are expected to miss significant time.
With four rotation players sidelined, Memphis should qualify for a 10-day hardship exception after its third game of the season, per The Daily Memphian’s Chris Herrington, who mentioned free agents Charles Bassey and Jared Butler as potential targets.
Jerome averaged 12.5 points, 3.4 assists, and shot 43.9 percent from three last season with Cleveland, finishing third in Sixth Man of the Year voting. Rookie Javon Small and second-year guard Cam Spencer are next in line for minutes.
