Grizzlies weigh guard options after injuries to Ty Jerome, Scotty Pippen Jr

The Grizzlies are exploring ways to stabilize their backcourt before Wednesday’s opener, according to Grant Afseth of RG.org.

With injuries piling up, sources told Afseth that Memphis is weighing both internal and external options and could add another guard to help ease the load.

The latest blow came when Scotty Pippen Jr. was ruled out for at least 12 weeks following surgery on his left big toe. Pippen had carved out a reliable role last season, averaging 9.9 points, 4.4 assists, and 3.3 rebounds in 79 games, including 21 starts.

Ja Morant remains week-to-week after suffering a left ankle sprain in early October. There’s optimism he could be ready for opening night, though nothing is guaranteed.

“Ja continues to work with our group,” coach Tuomas Iisalo told reporters. “He’s ramping up well, but we’ll keep being cautious.”

Adding to the concern, offseason pickup Ty Jerome exited Friday’s preseason finale with a right calf injury. The Grizzlies haven’t announced a timeline for his return.

Memphis is already at the 15-man roster limit, so any new addition would likely come via a two-way contract — potentially at the expense of PJ Hall, Olivier-Maxence Prosper, or Javon Small.

That said, Small might also be part of the solution. The rookie guard out of West Virginia impressed during the preseason, averaging 10.8 points, 4.8 assists, and 1.8 rebounds while shooting 52.9% from deep.

The Grizzlies will continue to evaluate the weekend’s wave of roster cuts across the league, but for now, they’re leaning on creativity and patience as they piece together a healthy rotation.
