The 2003 NBA Draft was known as the LeBron James sweepstakes. The prep-to-pro prospect may have been the draft's crown jewel, but there were other consolation prizes, headlined by Carmelo Anthony. So, when the draft lottery had the Detroit Pistons ending up with the second overall pick, many thought that's where the former Syracuse University product was heading.
However, former Pistons president of basketball operations Joe Dumars went a different route after watching Darko Milicic work out before the draft. A relatively unknown prospect, Milicic turned a lot of heads during workouts. Former Pistons guard Jon Barry said Dumars even compared the Serbian youngster to Dirk Nowitzki.
"I remember Joe Dumars saying we're working him out," Barry said. "I think half a dozen of us went over to watch. Dumars, he was telling me this guy is going to be the deal, said, 'He's better than Dirk. He's going to be an absolute stud.' So I said, I'm going to go check him out."
Perhaps Detroit's circumstances in 2003 influenced the organization's decision to keep the No. 2 selection. The team was coming off a 2002-03 season in which it finished first in the Eastern Conference and reached the East finals, where it was swept by the New Jersey Nets.
However, six years prior, the powerhouse Pistons squad had landed a high pick in what turned out to be a loaded draft class after a trade with the Memphis Grizzlies (previously known as the Vancouver Grizzlies).
#OTD in 2003, your @detroitpistons land the 2nd Pick in the 2003 NBA Draft. A trade that sent Otis Thorpe to the Grizzlies 6 years prior, paid off astronomical dividends on this day. https://t.co/zIpn7Prtcx pic.twitter.com/PICh7dUrtA

Because it was already a contender, it likely didn't see the need to add a potential franchise savior. So, taking a flyer on a young European who could have had all the time in the world to develop made sense.
Maybe if Milicic hadn't nailed his workouts and didn't have some folks thinking he would become better than Nowitzki, Dumars would have passed on him.
But with the Pistons needing another big man who could compensate for Ben Wallace's offensive limitations (they still hadn't traded for Rasheed Wallace then) and being set at the wing spots with Richard Hamilton and Tayshaun Prince, the allure of bringing in a promising and confident, if not brash, teenager was too good to ignore.
In hindsight, Detroit might have made a massive blunder. It's tough to categorize it as such definitively when the team won the championship in the 2003-04 campaign. Of course, Milicic had nothing to with it, as he was a non-factor all season long, particularly in the Finals.
16 years ago today, the Pistons selected Darko Milicic instead of Carmelo Anthony or Chris Bosh with the 2nd pick in the 2003 NBA Draft.

While taking Anthony, Dwyane Wade, or Chris Bosh could have extended the Pistons' title window, it still wouldn't have ensured a championship. On the other hand, Darko fulfilling Dumars' Nowitzki assertion wouldn't have guaranteed more rings either. So maybe the longtime executive should have taken the safer route.
