The Dallas Mavericks will be actively hunting for a point guard ahead of the 2025-26 NBA season.
With Luka Doncic getting traded to the Los Angeles Lakers and Kyrie Irving expected to miss the majority of the season due to a torn ACL, it’s no surprise.
After all, without a talented point guard, the Dallas Mavericks shouldn’t expect much success in the loaded Western Conference.
If the Mavericks are serious about signing a new point guard, taking a look at the top 50 free agents in the offseason would be a good place to start.
After all, the list is full of talented PGs who can help in elevating the organization. However, it seems like the Mavs already have a target in their mind.
According to NBA insider Ian Begley, Washington Wizards point guard Malcolm Brogdon is on the team’s list.
“I’d be a little bit surprised if it was him they [Knicks] turned to at the backup point guard role, I do know he’s [Brogdon] is on Dallas’ list,” Begley said on SNY.
“Dallas obviously needs a point guard with Kyrie Irving rehabbing from surgery. I don’t know if he’s at the top of Dallas’ list or somewhere in the middle, but he is there, Brogdon.
“The Mavs are going to dictate a lot of that point guard movement,” he added.
During the 2024-25 NBA season, the Mavs were stung by the injury bug throughout the campaign. Even at the end of the season, Anthony Davis suffered yet another injury.
Coming to Brogdon, he played 24 games for the Wizards this season. In those matchups, the veteran guard averaged 12.7 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 4.1 assists per game.
While Brogdon’s numbers are decent for a backup guard, the nine-year NBA veteran has a long history of injuries.
In the 2024-25 season alone, Brogdon missed 58 games due to six different injuries. Moreover, over the last five seasons, the 32-year-old has played more than 60 games just once.
Season | Number of games played |
2020-21 | 56 |
2021-22 | 36 |
2022-23 | 67 |
2023-24 | 39 |
2024-25 | 24 |
So, the Mavericks front office will have to compare the pros and cons of potentially signing Brogdon to the roster for the 2025-26 season.
