Houston Rockets Could Explore Blockbuster Move Involving Alperen Sengun, but There’s One Catch

The changing dynamics in Houston already have it in the air, and now it’s clearer than ever why there’s been a lot of buzz around Alperen Sengun.

Down five seasons in the league, the Turkish-origin star has always been one player whose potential has looked promising, but a full-blown redemption has always remained due.

But all of this could end up pivoting him into a whole new territory, given the daunting situation around the Rockets’ quest. However, as a recent development, Houston could be heading toward a franchise-defining offseason, with Sengun emerging as a potential centerpiece in blockbuster trade discussions.

According to reports from The Athletic’s William Guillory, Houston may consider packaging Sengun in pursuit of a superstar such as Giannis Antetokounmpo, especially if their playoff struggles continue.

The Rockets currently trail the Los Angeles Lakers 0-2 despite missing key players on the opposing side, raising concerns about whether their current core is ready to contend.

Though the 23-year-old forward has been one of Houston’s foundational pieces, averaging 20.4 points, 8.9 rebounds, and 6.2 assists on 51.9% shooting this season. However, his postseason efficiency has dipped against elite defensive pressure, exposing spacing issues within Houston’s half-court offense.

However, the logic behind a potential move is clear. Antetokounmpo, still performing at an MVP level, would instantly elevate the Rockets’ ceiling alongside Kevin Durant. Houston also possesses the draft capital and young assets, such as Amen Thompson and Jabari Smith Jr., needed to construct a compelling offer.

But the catch is significant. Trading Sengun would mean abandoning a long-term development timeline for an immediate championship push. It also hinges on Milwaukee’s willingness to engage, as Giannis remains under contract.

Does Alperen Sengun Trade Currently Make Sense For Rockets?

Apart from the fascinating returns on the proposed trade idea, the Rockets face a defining question: Does trading Alperen Sengun make sense right now?

Though on the surface, the timing feels reactionary as Sengun remains a two-time All-Star and one of the league’s most skilled offensive bigs. His regular-season production and playmaking profile suggest long-term franchise value, not a disposable asset.

However, the playoffs have complicated that evaluation. Against the Los Angeles Lakers, Sengun has struggled with efficiency and impact, particularly in high-leverage situations. Shooting below expectations and failing to capitalize on defensive attention toward Kevin Durant has only added to his scrutiny.

That’s where the dilemma sharpens, given Houston is no longer purely rebuilding. With Durant on the roster, the window has shifted toward contention. In that context, underperformance in a winnable series raises legitimate concerns about his readiness as a second option.

Still, trading him now carries risk. His value is likely depressed, and moving a young cornerstone for a short-term upgrade could backfire if internal growth was the correct path.
