How Cameron Thomas dealt with not playing enough minutes in past seasons
USA TODAY Sports

As a third-year player, Cameron Thomas has already covered most of the roles in the NBA. He has gone from being a G-League assignee to being a seldom-used role player, and now he is thriving as a primary scorer on the Brooklyn Nets roster. That kind of journey takes a long time for most but for Cam, it only took a few seasons.

He recently appeared on JJ Redick's "Old Man and the Three" podcast, discussing his transition from a limited role to a prominent one—a journey familiar to JJ, who evolved from a bench player to a regular starter throughout his career.

“The hardest thing for me was standing there and thinking you might get in this game, and you might hear some stuff,” Cam said on The Old Man and the Three. “Out of nowhere in the third quarter, ‘Cam, get in!’, your mind’s not in it. Then you get in all mad because he told you, you’re going to get in earlier.”

Cam had to play behind some amazing talents

During his time with the Nets, Cam has played with some amazing players, including Kyrie Irving, a standout guard. Brooklyn could've easily relied on Cam as a starting-level guard, but they needed Kyrie's experience and proven track record.

Cam was a young scorer whose reputation couldn't match up to Kyrie and early-days Harden. It's tough not to empathize with the LSU product due to messy playing time and a lack of consistency.

Cam has his opportunity now

With fewer guards in front of him in the rotation, Thomas has finally earned his starting spot. He is the best scorer on the Nets now and has constantly kept being the most reliable offensive option with his ability to isolate and score by himself.

Coach Jacque Vaughn trusts him to be the number one scorer and he is stepping up to the plate during the 2023/24 season. He got injured after a strong start to the season but he has returned and he looks the same.

The high-scoring guard will continue to take advantage of the opportunities he’s given and he will only improve from here, which is awesome news for Nets fans.
