Often, an NBA team is only as good as its best player. ... and the Indiana Pacers are offering proof of that.
In the Pacers' 114-110 victory over the New Orleans Pelicans on Monday, Tyrese Haliburton's performance saved them from losing two straight to the injury-wrecked foe.
At 8-10, the Pacers have ways to go before considering themselves a threat, but they are still within striking distance of a Play-In spot. But without Haliburton's awakening, they'd exist as a fringe Play-In team.
What occurred for Haliburton to rise from his slumber? Despite earning All-NBA honors last season, the Pacers point guard averages a measly 16 points on 39 percent from the field and 32 percent from 3. However, in his previous two games, Haliburton morphed into the player Indiana grew to admire, as his confidence was showcased in the no-look passes and deep 3-point conversions.
Haliburton is asserting himself in the offense, commanding the ball, with 11 assists in the last two contests.
Whether it's a mental holdback from his Olympic injury or a current ailment, Haliburton has not recently taken control of games. Instead, he deferred or settled from 3s without attempting drives for open teammates.
However, he seemingly found peace with whatever negated his typical, cheery, efficient game. What fixed it?
One theory is the level of competition he played in the previous two games.
Beating the Washington Wizards and injury-barraged Pelicans doesn't come with any brownie points from the NBA universe, but sometimes, it takes a few softball pitches before you can get on base.
Washington and New Orleans, at least at the moment, lack the necessary defenders to provide Haliburton with the friction he's seen throughout the 2024-25 season.
Perhaps the strength of Indiana's schedule plays a part.
However, finding his confidence is also another factor. Haliburton's demeanor and overall vibe felt different in the last two games. His face, while making the highlight passes, says it all. He's comfortable. ... a "smiling savior,'' if you will.
Whether or not Haliburton's groove continues is one thing, but for now, the Pacers can't get picky for when their All-NBA decides to contribute at such a level.
