Some Phoenix Suns struggle to comprehend how their team completely missed playing in the playoffs when they have two of the most prolific scorers in league history. Fans would usually kill to have Kevin Durant or Devin Booker on their rosters, but the team just struggled to win games with their top-heavy roster.
There’s only so much coaching can do to help a team improve their chances of a championship, as they’ve now fired their third coach in four seasons. It’s become increasingly clear among fans that there’s a fundamental flaw with the team structure.
With such a realization, there’s only one way the organization can go: blow up their current core and take a step back in the 2025 offseason.
Leading ESPN insider Shams Charania announced that Phoenix’s sweeping changes don’t end at finding a new tactician. It was brutally clear that the Suns’ experiment with Durant, Booker, and Bradley Beal was a mistake they must address immediately.
Charania revealed the team’s plans for the summer, as reported by Fadeaway World’s Ishaan Bhattacharya:
“This iteration of the team did not work, however, and the franchise is set to retool around Booker.”
“This marks the first action in a summer of change coming to the Suns. Phoenix is expected to engage in trade conversations involving Durant and will have discussions on the future of Beal, according to sources.”
“Multiple teams will seriously pursue Durant, who finished another stellar season, and the franchise is expected to work with Durant and his business partner and Boardroom CEO Rich Kleiman on the next landing spot for the future Hall of Famer.”
Durant may not have panned out in Phoenix, but there will always be demand for a volume scorer who can also provide defensive versatility with his height. The 36-year-old had a solid individual season, averaging 26.6 points, 6.0 rebounds, 4.2 assists, and 1.2 blocks a game.
Depending on who the Phoenix Suns deal with, making an NBA Finals return may be out of the cards for them. Fans can only hope that Devin Booker (who finished the year with 25.6 PPG, 4.1 RPG, 7.1 APG) genuinely wants to spend his entire career in Arizona.
