Is Dallas Mavericks Star Kyrie Irving’s Future Uncertain?

A potential Kyrie Irving trade has been a hot topic in the NBA world, and Irving’s future may be uncertain in the near future. Irving, 34, has been dealing with contract uncertainty and injury issues. He signed a three-year, $119 million contract extension with the Dallas Mavericks in June 2025. His extension includes a player option for the 2027-28 NBA season.

Is Dallas Mavericks Star Kyrie Irving’s Future Uncertain?

Without a doubt, there are a million different ways for the Mavericks to reset. But, as much as Irving is a fan favorite in Dallas, the team should steer clear of holding onto a 34-year-old point guard who will turn 35 on March 23, 2027. Here’s why, so you can make an informed decision.

Before Masai Ujiri became the Dallas Mavericks’ new president and alternate governor, the Kyrie Irving trade rumors already began to swirl, due to a combination of Irving’s age, the Mavericks’ organizational shift, and the rest of the NBA’s interest in Irving.

Although Ujiri expressed excitement about seeing Irving and Mavs rookie Cooper Flagg play together, NBA insider Jake Fischer recently begged to differ. Fisher’s recent talking point in a livestream for the Bleacher Report mentioned his feeling that Mavs fans may never see Irving and Flagg, 19, take the floor together.

“I don’t necessarily believe that Kyrie’s gonna be on the Mavericks roster come opening night.” Fischer said. “There will be contending teams that make trade calls for Dallas.”

Fisher’s statement, in part, contains a great point. As much as the Mavs fans would be crushed to the core if the team trades Irving, Irving’s veteran leadership, calming presence, and re-invention from villain to hero isn’t enough. His return isn’t guaranteed come opening night.

Is an Irving Trade Possible for the Mavericks?

Irving has been the voice of reason during one of the Mavericks’ darkest times in franchise story. After the Luka Doncic trade, Mavs fans leaned towards Irving’s leadership and presence in an apparent attempt to console themselves. He was one of the best players on the 2024 NBA Finals roster and will continue to be at the top.

However, his time in Dallas might be up, and there’s no shortage of NBA teams that would contact the Mavs about him. He’s one of the top point guards of all-time. He has proven over and over again that he can win at the highest level. He could be a great addition for any NBA team to get over the hump and emerge as true championship contenders.

The Mavericks’ Outlook

Whether or not Irving stays in Dallas, the Mavericks’ outlook would likely remain the same. The team’s culture change has already begun, and the Mavericks mutually parted ways with head coach Jason Kidd after five NBA seasons.

The Mavs have been appearing to head in a new direction with Flagg as part of their long-term plans. Flagg’s apparent commitment to playing in Dallas aligns with the Mavs’ reported strategy to keep their high-upside star to avoid generational superstar turnover.

Previously, Flagg made his stance clear about leaving the Mavs for the hometown Boston Celtics in the future. After scoring 16 points in the Mavs’ 120-100 loss in Boston, a reporter asked him if he’d ever consider leaving Dallas for Boston.

He responded, “Naw, I love being a Maverick … That’s home, and I don’t want anything else. It was incredible to be able to play here; obviously, this is the place I came as a kid and got to watch. So, I think it’s gonna be incredibly fun for the rest of my career to come here and play in front of this crowd.”
