Detroit Pistons guard Jaden Ivey remains optimistic about returning to the court this season as he continues to recover from a broken left fibula sustained earlier this year.
The 2022 No. 5 overall draft pick is progressing well in rehabilitation, which recently advanced to weight-bearing exercises and basketball-related activities.
Speaking to reporters for the first time since his injury, Ivey shared his day-to-day focus on recovery. He hopes to rejoin his team before the season concludes, emphasizing his eagerness to contribute to the Pistons’ ongoing success.
“I’m just targeting day-by-day. That’s it,” Ivey said. “The time will come when my body says get ready. I don’t have a thought of when that could be but just taking it day-by-day for sure.”
The 23-year-old guard had been enjoying a career-best year, averaging 17.6 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 4.0 assists through 30 games before the injury occurred on January 1 during a victory over the Orlando Magic. The incident involved a collision with Magic guard Cole Anthony, which resulted in Ivey being carried off the court on a stretcher.
Despite his absence, the Pistons have maintained strong form, posting a 12-5 record since the start of February—the third-best in the Eastern Conference. This success has motivated Ivey, who is driven by his team’s performance.
“It’s definitely motivating. I want to be out there so bad,” Ivey remarked. “And I’m putting in the work to get back, so just seeing those guys go out there and compete hard, that’s all I want to do is compete and play the game of basketball, so it’s definitely encouraging and exciting to see.”
Teammates, including All-Star guard Cade Cunningham, have played a crucial role in Ivey’s recovery by offering constant support and encouragement.
“When [Cade’s] in the game, and they call a timeout, I just talk to him and he’s always like, ‘Man, when you get back, it’s going to be a different level’ and that encouragement and just that belief of when you come back, things are gonna continue to rise means a lot to me,” Ivey said.
As Ivey works towards a comeback, his return could significantly boost the Pistons’ lineup, potentially enhancing their playoff push. His progress will be closely monitored, with another update expected in four weeks, as the team and fans alike look forward to his anticipated return to the hardwood.
