James Harden discusses his failed time with Sixers, Nets

New Los Angeles Clippers guard James Harden forced his way out of the Philadelphia 76ers after requesting a trade this summer. Ironically, he joined the Sixers by forcing his way out of the Brooklyn Nets.

When speaking to the media in Los Angeles, Harden explained why things didn't go to plan during his last two stops in the NBA.

"Leaving Brooklyn, which was a funky situation, and going to Philly," Harden said. "Last summer, taking $36 million less to make the team better. Changing my role, which is ball-dominant, and my ball-dominance is really effective...Whatever people talk about and say, I just want to win at the highest level. Taking less money and sacrificing my role that's not talked about...The (Sixers) front office had other plans; they didn't want me."

Harden's role may not be what he envisions with the Clippers. Russell Westbrook is also at his best when operating as a ball-dominant star. Westbrook has enjoyed a strong start to the season. However, Harden and Westbrook have been on the same team before, so they understand how to work together.

The Clippers have taken a risk by acquiring Harden. They were already looking like a potential contender in their opening games. Harden could elevate the squad, or his presence could disrupt the equilibrium and flow of the roster. Ty Lue will be the man tasked with striking the right balance.

Still, Harden clearly wants to share his side of the story. The narrative surrounding him is that he's a disruptive force within the locker room. Yet, there may have been things behind the scenes that we're unaware of. That won't bother Clippers fans. They know they're getting one of the best scorers in NBA history. If Harden can reach a high level, he improves the team's chances of success. But he has to buy into the system Lue wants to run. And that means he will need to continue sacrificing.

With this season being the final year of his current contract, Harden needs to rebuild some value around the league. Being a team player and helping the Clippers challenge for a championship is the perfect way to do that.
