There could be growing tension between the Boston Celtics and former Finals MVP Jaylen Brown.

Things are changing for the Celtics. Jayson Tatum’s Achilles injury during the playoffs has knocked them out of the championship picture for now, and they’ve made some significant roster moves in response.

Kristaps Porzingis was dealt to the Hawks, while Jrue Holiday was sent to Portland. Those trades signalled a shift in direction for Boston, and more changes have followed.

Luke Kornet and Al Horford both left via free agency, and though Anfernee Simons came in as part of the Holiday deal, there are already reports that Boston is looking to move him on as well.

With so many new faces coming in, Brown will be expected to set the standard both on and off the court. But judging by his recent comments to reporters, he doesn’t sound thrilled about how things are shaping up.

Jaylen Brown not happy with his role on Celtics

The reporter asked: “Is it different for you this year compared to last year? Like having Derrick White with you here but not having Jayson?”

“Yeah, we don’t got nothing planned out,” Brown said. “We’re just trying to come together as a team collectively.” Derrick White is one of our best players, so I’m looking forward to playing with him more.”

Bobby Marks expects Jaylen Brown may consider requesting a trade from Boston soon.

Bobby Marks said: “If this thing goes sideways early or before we even get into training camp here and there’s no conversations about what they’re going to do down there then I would not be surprised if Jaylen requests a trade out of Boston.”

Jaylen Brown discusses how politics shaped his time with the Boston Celtics

In a recent interview with Celtics Blog, Jaylen Brown opened up about his time in Boston, revealing some frustrations he hadn’t previously spoken about.

The former All-Star explained that he’s often felt the need to hold back during his stint with the Celtics, pointing to politics as one of several reasons. He went as far as to say that his role has left him feeling unfulfilled.

“It’s been a long journey here in Boston. I’ve had to deal with a lot,” Brown said.

“I feel like I haven’t been able to be myself in certain capacities — because of the politics, and because maybe people feel uncomfortable with who I am.

“I disagree with a lot of things. I’ve had to change roles, styles.

“I’ve had to do things that other players of my talent just haven’t had to do, and I’ve been okay with them, because I’ve always been a team guy. I feel like sometimes that gets taken for granted.”

Jaylen Brown looks to influence future Celtics despite ongoing frustrations

Despite the challenges, Brown recognises the positives that have come from his time in Boston, including leading the Celtics to an NBA title.

“I’m extremely grateful that we won a championship. I’m extremely grateful that we’ve been able to have success, and that’s what it’s about.

“It’s not all about you, it’s not all about me, you know what I mean? I want the next generation to know that as well — it’s okay to play your role on the team. It’s okay to do whatever, but don’t let that define you.”

With Tatum sidelined until at least 2026-27, Brown will step into the lead role for Boston next season.

He’ll be expected to keep standards high across the roster and maintain team culture even during what looks like a down year for the club.
