Jaylen Brown Hints at Leaving Celtics in the Future to Join Hometown Team

Boston Celtics forward Jaylen Brown has always been one of the more outspoken players in the NBA. He frequently discusses social issues and has drawn attention for his opposition to major corporations, the biggest one being Nike.

Widely recognized as one of the smartest players in the league, Brown has given lectures at Harvard and has documented ties to the school, but one thing they didn’t appear to teach him is how to avoid controversy.

The former champion made headlines Wednesday when he revealed that he may leave Boston in the future.

When asked if fans would ever see him play for his hometown team, Brown told his interviewer, “You never know.”

While he’s not from Atlanta specifically, Brown was born in raised in Georgia as a Hawks fan, so he kept the door open for a return to his birthplace.

He didn’t openly confirm that he wanted to play there, but a player under contract typically doesn’t float the idea of leaving his team, especially one just a year removed from winning the finals.

Brown has been at the center of Celtics discussions for years, with fans and media pundits discussing his fit with teammate Jayson Tatum.

Over the last few years, people have also begun pitting the two against each other, feverishly debating which of the two is the better player.

They’ve constantly expressed their love and respect for each other, as well as their willingness to play together, but constantly hearing the arguments can become tiresome. If Brown did ever make a move from Boston, that could be a key reason why.

Celtics’ Outlook for 2025-26

The Celtics are set to embark on their first ever journey without Tatum, who will likely miss the entire season with a torn Achilles that he suffered in the 2025 playoffs.

Brown has the potential to answer a lot of questions about his own game and ability to lead a team this season, which could either drive him away or bring him closer to Tatum than ever before.

Boston has already had to trade away several key pieces to last year’s championship run because of salary cap constraints.

These comments don’t necessarily mean a trade is on the horizon, but it’s certainly something to keep an eye on as the state of the Celtics has never been so volatile.
