The Salt Lake City Stars are paying tribute to Utah’s basketball history with a new uniform that will ring up memories of the Utah Stars and the old ABA. The Stars, of course, are the G League affiliate of the Jazz.

SLC unveiled redesigned jerseys that feature a modern twist on the classic ABA-era Stars look. The uniform incorporates a color palette of Mountain Purple, Sky Blue, and Midnight Black, mirroring the Jazz’s most recent rebrand.

According to the team, the primary logo is “a modern interpretation of the original Utah Stars design, with the team name shooting across a purple basketball.” The new secondary logo — a streamlined shooting star — is meant to reflect both the upward path of G League prospects and the Stars’ development focus.

The team previously wore retro Utah Stars jerseys during a two-game promotional event in 2023.

Looking Back at the Utah Stars

Before the G League franchise carried the name, the Utah Stars were a prominent ABA team in the early 1970s.

The franchise relocated to Salt Lake City in 1970 after three seasons split between Anaheim and Los Angeles. The move paid off immediately, as the Stars won the ABA championship in their first season in Utah, defeating the Kentucky Colonels in seven games. Game 7 was a 131–121 victory at the Salt Palace.

The team folded in 1975, just one year before the NBA-ABA merger.

Front Office and Coaching Moves

The uniform update is just one part of an active offseason for the Stars.

Rich Higgins has been named the team’s new head coach, replacing Steve Wojciechowski, who is joining Will Hardy’s bench as a full-time assistant with the Jazz.

In the front office, former Stars general manager Marquis Newman has been promoted to Director of Pro Scouting for Utah’s NBA team. He’ll be succeeded in the G League by Katie Benzan, a former standout guard who played collegiately at Harvard and Maryland from 2017 to 2022.

These changes come after the Jazz elevated Austin Ainge to President of Basketball Operations earlier this summer. Ainge is the son of Jazz CEO Danny Ainge.
