Joel Embiid Downplays LeBron James Comparisons Over Gameday Fit

Joel Embiid arrived at the biggest game of the season for him with an all-black outfit, dark shades, and white earphones to block out all the noise. This bold look built curiosity right before a huge night, along with reminding fans about another NBA star sporting a similar attire years ago.

On May 2, observers compared Embiid’s focused look to an iconic outfit worn by LeBron James many years ago. On Sunday, May 3, an X update shared by Underdog NBA revealed that Embiid also addressed these comparisons during a quick media session.

Embiid made it clear that wearing the earphones is just a normal part of his routine. He had no intentions of replicating James’ look. He said, “I always wear these earphones anyways. I guess it just happened to be a coincidence. I don’t always wear shades, but I felt like it would be good to come out in Boston and beat them, so I wanted to dress all black. If you want to compare that to what (LeBron) did, I think it was just a coincidence…allegedly.”

Embiid sported the outfit before Game 7 of the playoff series between the Philadelphia 76ers and the Boston Celtics in Game 7. And the outcome couldn’t have been better.

The 76ers beat the Celtics 109-100 to win the series. Embiid recorded 34 points, 12 rebounds, 6 assists, and 2 blocks. Tyrese Maxey added a brilliant 30 points, 11 rebounds, and 7 assists.

Embiid was playing through a tough recovery. He recently returned to the court from an appendectomy and had very little time to rest. But he didn’t let their effects show on the court.

Together, they helped Philadelphia complete only the 14th 3-1 comeback in NBA history. This was also their 1st series win against Boston since 1982.

But while Embiid called his resemblance to James’ look a “coincidence,” a comparison between the situations where they sported the outfit tells a different story.

Joel Embiid’s ‘Coincidence’ Mirrors a Legendary Mindset Moment

James wore a similar outfit during the 2016 NBA Finals. The Cavaliers were also down 3-1 against the Golden State Warriors at that time.

That specific outfit became legendary. James led his team to the greatest comeback in Finals history. That look is now known as a symbol for being locked into the game.

Both Embiid and James faced a huge 3-1 deficit. They both had to play a road Game 7. And they both dealt with immense pressure. The visual similarity of the clothes and the perfect timing gave rise to this speculation.

After the big win, head coach Nick Nurse praised his star player. He highlighted his conditioning and strong leadership. This was impressive given his short recovery window and the tough game schedule.

Philadelphia will now face the New York Knicks in the Eastern Conference Semifinals. Game 1 will be on Monday, May 4, 2026. The 76ers are the 7th seed.

So, while we may never know if Embiid’s resemblance to James’ outfit for Game 7 was truly just a coincidence, do you think that the former wanted to deliver a subtle message?
