The Phoenix Suns are actively listening to trade offers for their superstar Kevin Durant following an underwhelming 2024-25 season run.
Initially, the rumors around Kevin Durant’s departure caught fire around the NBA Trade Deadline, but no move reached a conclusion.
Those conversations have resumed heading into the offseason, with teams like the Houston Rockets, San Antonio Spurs, and Miami Heat showing interest in the 2x NBA champion.
However, it appears that the Phoenix Suns’ asking price for KD is too high, as no trade has been finalized yet.
Even at 36 years old, Durant is a talented player who averaged 26.6 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 4.2 assists per game this season.
But considering Durant’s age, there’s no all-out war between franchises to trade for him like the Suns expected. Teams like the Rockets can just wait for the Suns to accept their offer, as Brian Windhorst suggested.
Keeping that in mind, former Memphis Grizzlies VP of Basketball Operations John Hollinger claimed that the Suns are clueless about the Durant situation.
“I think this is just a classic Phoenix s___ show. They thought they were gonna get stronger offers than they’re getting, and now they don’t really know what to do,” Hollinger said on his podcast.
Hollinger’s co-host, Nate Duncan, asked if it’s an option that the Suns ultimately do not trade away Durant.
“I think it’s an option. They’re not required to. The only thing is he has one year left on his deal — he can be a free agent after the year — so he has some leverage,” Hollinger added.
In case no trade is finalized during the offseason, the Suns could continue with their current core of Durant, Devin Booker, and Bradley Beal.
However, Hollinger still suggested that the Suns should end their current experiment and start from scratch.
“For Phoenix to walk away with nothing from KD is a tough one. They still have this idea that they can probably contend for something, I guess?
“I don’t know how realistic they are at this point. Obviously they should tear it down, but it doesn’t seem like that’s what they’re doing,” Hollinger concluded.
In two-and-a-half seasons that KD has been on the roster, the Suns have one first-round and one second-round exit in the playoffs to show for it.
More concerningly, the franchise has fired three head coaches in three years, as Jordan Ott is all set to take over the head coaching position ahead of the 2025-26 season.
