The Denver Nuggets' acquisition of Jonas Valanciunas was one of the major signings for the team in the offseason. Unfortunately, this move was also marked by a lot of disarray, as the Lithuanian indicated his intention of playing in Europe for Greek side Panathinaikos.

After much back-and-forth, and pressure from the Nuggets for Valanciunas to honor his contract, the big man is set to remain in Denver this season. The Nuggets' new backup center addressed this move recently in an interview with BasketNews, presenting a positive picture of the season to come. He said:

"I want to clear the air about my playing situation next season now that Denver has made their decision to keep me. The idea of playing for Panathinaikos, closer to home, was very exciting to me, but that will have to wait. I am fully committed to honoring my contract with the Nuggets this season and will give it my all to compete for a championship."

The former Sacramento Kings center was a vital addition to Denver's squad in the offseason. Joining as the primary backup for Nikola Jokic, Valanciunas brought a lot of flexibility to the team regarding their distribution of playing time.

After a rather underwhelming season with the Kings, which saw them eliminated from the Play-In tournament, the 33-year-old seemed committed to leaving the NBA.

This was likely influenced by an offer from Panathinaikos, which also guaranteed more money over three years with the team. The combination of a bigger payday and proximity to family made the move especially appealing.

The Nuggets’ signing of Valanciunas was immediately complicated by reports of his desire to return to Europe, with Valanciunas also expressing his desire to part ways with Denver. However, the Nuggets' present needs for a reliable backup center seem to have won out in the end.

The 33-year-old's contract with the Nuggets is only guaranteed for the upcoming season, with a team-option becoming a factor in the 2026-27 season. He is currently expected to earn $10.3 million next season.

Setting aside the recent tensions, which required some mending of relations, Valanciunas is a massive boost to Denver's roster strength. As a very capable inside presence, the big man brings a lot to the table that could help the Nuggets mount a title charge this season.

Last year, the Lithuanian put up an impressive average of 10.4 points and 7.7 rebounds while coming off the bench. Although he ended the season with the Kings, Valanciunas had also been a solid contributor off the bench for the Washington Wizards during his short stint with the team.

Having played in 81 games last season, the 33-year-old has displayed impressive durability. This will be viewed favorably by the Nuggets as they look to preserve their superstar for the long haul, especially in light of his uncertain future with the team

Although the Nuggets’ roster appears largely set, the team could still look to make minor adjustments to give them an edge.
