Jordan Poole's contract extension looks bad for Warriors

Before this season started, the Golden State Warriors signed Jordan Poole to a four-year, $140 million contract extension.

The deal made sense at the time. After a fantastic playoff run, the 23-year-old was touted as one of the NBA's emerging guards. Now the deal looks problematic.

Poole averages 20.7 points, 4.6 assists and 2.8 rebounds on a 43/33/86 shooting split. While his points and assists have incrementally increased, his overall efficiency is down from last season. Every important advanced analytic stat is down for Poole from last season, too.

Last season, Poole's effective field goal percentage was 54%. It's 51% this season. His shot selection, which can sometimes be atrocious, is a massive contributor.

Per StatMuse, Poole is second to last on Golden State in plus/minus at -82, ahead of only JaMychal Green (-111). He averages 3.3 turnovers per game, up from 2.5 last season.

After Golden State's championship run, opponents put Poole on notice. This season, they throw their best defenders against him and devise plans to stop him, but Poole hasn't adjusted.

The 6-foot-4 guard is also a liability on defense. Poole struggles to keep anybody in front of him, even smaller guards. He has the third-worst defensive rating on the team at 117.2, only ahead of Klay Thompson (117.3) and Moses Moody (117.4).

Poole is talented, with shooting abilities similar to the "Splash Brothers," but he must improve significantly for the Warriors to feel comfortable with their investment.
