Karl-Anthony Towns Heartbroken After ‘Brother’ Naz Reid’s Sister Gets Tragically Killed

Exactly a year ago, Karl-Anthony Towns was still a member of the Minnesota Timberwolves, where he was looking towards the 2024-25 season playing alongside Naz Reid, Anthony Edwards, and his teammates.

A few weeks later, the Kentucky alum was traded to the New York Knicks. The center took some time to grasp his new reality, even though he was essentially moving back home.

Everyone knows what Edwards is capable of. But it was the undrafted star out of LSU who made a name for himself as a dependable player. He then delivered his best season and deservedly won the 2024 NBA sixth Man of the Year award.

Reid then signed a 5-year, $125 million contract extension after helping the Wolves to the West Finals for a second straight season. Now, the 6′ 9″ big man is facing a personal crisis, which came to the attention of his former teammate and fellow New Jersey native.

Heartbroken. No words can ever take away the pain for my brother. Holding everyone close in prayer today.

This message was for Naz Reid, whose sister, Toraya Reid, was shot and killed on September 6, 2025, in New Jersey. Police found Toraya, 28, unresponsive after being notified of gunshots.

Naz Reid’s sister allegedly killed by boyfriend

When police arrived at the Paragon apartment complex in Jackson around 11 a.m. on Saturday, they found Toraya Reid near the complex exit. She lay motionless after being shot multiple times.

When officers tried to canvas the neighborhood, they found 29-year-old Shaquille Green running down the road. He was taken into custody after a chase, but he did not put up much of a fight.

According to the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office, Green was in a relationship with Toraya and had been living in Jackson Township. He has been charged with murder and unlawful possession of a handgun.

It is unclear if the two shared an apartment, and also if Green is the one who killed Naz Reid‘s sister. An investigation is underway, and officers are looking into all the evidence available.

Toraya Reid was a pillar of support for her younger brother, who has since been posting pictures of his slain sister on social media. He has a younger sister, Jakahya.

Naz Reid was crucial in Timberwolves’ resurgence

Naz Reid had just signed his massive contract extension this offseason and was probably enjoying a part of it before news of his sister’s death came about.

It might be the worst bit of news for the 26-year-old, who always held Toraya Reid as a mother figure to him and his younger sister, Jakahya Reid. Handling a personal loss is crucial as he is just a month away from returning to Minneapolis.

The Minnesota Timberwolves want to do better than how they fared against the eventual champion Oklahoma City Thunder in the 2025 West Finals. For that to happen, they need all hands on deck and a commitment to play better.

Anthony Edwards has committed to working out in the offseason better than anyone. His collapse in the West Finals was touted as one of the reasons for the Wolves’ debacle.

However, they will also need Naz Reid, Julius Randle, Rudy Gobert, and the rest of the roster to step up and focus on improving their own performances before the 2025-26 season starts.

Every team in the league has improved its roster during this offseason. But the Wolves did not do much in terms of free agent signings or trades after they essentially hung on to the group from last year.

Continuity is important, and maybe they need that consistency if they are to push each other. But first, they need their popular sixth man to come back after grieving over his older sister.
