Kawhi Leonard On Palisades Fire: 'Everybody Is Not Okay. You've Seen The Houses Burned Down.'

Kawhi Leonard, known for his stoic demeanor, opened up about the devastation caused by the recent Los Angeles wildfires and the toll it has taken on the city, his team, and his own family. The fires, which have ravaged the Pacific Palisades and surrounding areas, have left thousands displaced and hundreds of homes destroyed. Leonard’s comments following his return to action for the Clippers highlighted the gravity of the situation.

"As we know, everybody is not okay. You've seen the houses burned down so it's self-explanatory."

After missing a game against the Denver Nuggets to be with his evacuated family, Leonard returned to the court against the Miami Heat. In his post-game remarks, Leonard spoke candidly about the impact of the wildfires. His words underscored the widespread devastation and the emotional strain felt by many, including his own family and community. Despite his own home being spared, Leonard’s focus was on the broader devastation impacting his neighbors and community.

The Clippers forward had to leave his team mid-road trip to tend to his family, who were forced to evacuate their home in the Pacific Palisades. Despite returning to the court, Leonard’s somber tone reflected the weight of the tragedy still looming over the city.

The Clippers managed to secure a 109-98 victory over the Miami Heat in their first game back after the fires, thanks to strong performances from James Harden, Norman Powell, and Ivica Zubac. 

Head coach Tyronn Lue also acknowledged the difficulty of preparing his team under such circumstances. The Clippers’ performance was as much about resilience as it was about basketball, serving as a rallying point for a city in crisis.

Leonard played limited minutes in his return, contributing six points, five rebounds, and two steals. Despite his current minutes restriction, Leonard emphasized patience in regaining his rhythm. He stressed that his focus remains on staying healthy and supporting his team as they navigate a challenging season.

Harden and Lue both praised Leonard’s efforts to integrate back into the lineup despite the disruptions.
