Kings Given Poor Free Agency Grade Despite Addressing Key Need

The Sacramento Kings entered the NBA offseason with multiple decisions to make, including whether they wanted to begin a rebuild.

It is clear that Sacramento is not going to be rebuilding as they continue to add to their roster to compete for a playoff spot next season.

So far in free agency, the Kings have made only one move as they signed veteran point guard Dennis Schroder via a sign-and-trade deal with the Detroit Pistons.

With the addition of Schroder, the Kings were able to fill their void at the point guard position after trading De’Aaron Fox to the San Antonio Spurs at the trade deadline last season.

Despite the addition of Schroder, Sacramento has yet to make any other moves during free agency and they also lost Jake LaRavia to the Los Angeles Lakers.

With these moves, Bleacher Report’s Greg Swartz gave the Kings a C- free agency grade as he was not moved by their addition of Schroder.

“No team loves overpaying past-their-prime players more than the Sacramento Kings, a time-honored tradition that includes the likes of Rajon Rondo, DeMar DeRozan and now Schroder,” Swartz said. “Sacramento gave the 31-year-old point guard a three-year, $45 million contract that will end up being a sign-and-trade with the Detroit Pistons.”

Swartz did not hold back on his thoughts about the Kings’ addition of Schroder and he does make a compelling point.

Schroder is a solid backup point guard but he will now take over the role of starting point guard for the Kings, a role he has not had in quite some time, especially with a potential playoff contender.

Despite this, Sacramento felt as though adding Schroder to fill their void at the point guard position was the best move for them as they try to compete for a playoff spot next season with their core of Domantas Sabonis, DeRozan, Zach LaVine and Keegan Murray.
