Klay Thompson unsure about future with Mavericks

The Dallas Mavericks closed out their season with a win over the Chicago Bulls, 149-128, at American Airlines Center on Sunday. The Mavericks tallied a 26-56 record, missing the playoffs for the second straight season.

The last two years have been awful for Dallas, considering that the team just reached the NBA Finals in 2024, which delivered a lot of optimism to the franchise.

That was precisely the reason why Klay Thompson signed with the Mavericks in the offseason in 2024 after his historic run with the Golden State Warriors. Helping Dallas build on the momentum and playing alongside Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving were enticing for Thompson.

The 36-year-old sharpshooter, however, found himself with a reduced role, as he has struggled to regain his old form.

When asked about his future with the Mavericks, Thompson did not mince words, as shown in the video posted by The Dallas Morning News’ Mike Curtis.

“That’s a hard-hitter. I’m not sure. I’m under contract, so I do, but I’ve definitely learned in my time in Dallas that things can change on a dime. I’m just here to have a great time and put my best foot forward,” said Thompson.

Thompson, a four-time champion, also went on a brief monologue about the harsh realities of playing in the NBA.

“That’s the hardest part about being an NBA player. They think they pay you for the records broken or the rings won. But really, they pay you for being able to be traded, being on the road away from your family on a consistent basis, going through injuries, and all the stuff that the common fan doesn’t really see that makes it difficult,” added Thompson.

He only played briefly with Doncic, while Irving missed this season due to an ACL injury. Doncic’s supposed replacement, Anthony Davis, only played 29 games in Dallas.

Thompson averaged career-lows of 11.7 points, 39.3% field goals, 2.1 rebounds, 1.4 assists, and 21.7 minutes in 69 games this season.

He had 12 points, all via three-pointers, in 10 minutes against the Bulls.
